BILLY OATES CUP CAMPAIGN STARTS THIS WEEKEND
25/06/2009

The GMB High Green Village Cricket Club will start their Billy Oates campaign this weekend against Rotherham Phoenix (Away @ Phoenix Cricket Club - 2PM)

This is High Green's 3rd tilt at the cup, and the previous two years have brought memories, both good and bad.

2007 saw High Gree enter the cup for the first time, and was involved in the battle of North Sheffield, with an away fixture at Harley. After bowling out Harley for 132, HGV were destroyed and were bowled out for 22.

2008 saw HGV benefit from a forfeight from Shardlows, the reward was a home tie against Wickersley. One of the heavyweight names in South Yorkshire Cricket came to Ecclesfield Park expecting an easy cup tie, however that was not to be the case.

After a massive delay for rain (with HGV 4-0 after 4 overs when the heavens opened) HGV ended up scoring a competitive 174, with Iain MacDonald scoring his first ever half-century for the Baggy Green.

A combination of poor shots, great bowling and outstanding fielding created intense pressure on Wickersley, and was not able to reach the winning line, HGV was off to the Semi-Finals.

The Semi-Final draw brought a local derby, with an away trip across the road to Sheffield Civil Service, and unfortunately HGV could not reproduce any heroics and Sheffield Civil Service went on not only to win the tie, but also to Win the Billy Oates Cup.

A lot of the class of 2008 are in the class of 2009, and are ready to go that extra length to make the final on the 9th August. However for them to do so, not only must they beat Rotherham Phoenix, they will have to beat the winners of Wickersley/Harley (Semi Final 19/07 away).

Are the class of 2009 ready to take the GMB High Green Village Cricket Club a stage further in Sheffield Crickets premier cup competition?
